Typalock is coming to the Dalhousie Student Union Building
For the 2026–2027 school year, the Dalhousie Student Union Building is piloting Typalock. It is the first public installation of our tap-to-focus system, brought to campus by the student-led team that built it.
The SUB is getting Focus Spaces
Starting this school year, study areas throughout the Dalhousie Student Union Building in Halifax will be equipped with Typalock focus tags: small NFC tags that turn a table, a room, or a quiet corner into a Focus Space. Tap your phone on a tag with the app open and the apps that usually pull you away are locked. Tap out when you’re done, and your phone is yours again. No willpower required in between.
How it works

Find a tag. Look for Typalock focus tags around the SUB’s study areas as installation rolls out.

Tap in. Open Typalock and hold your iPhone to the tag to start a focus session. Your distracting apps lock instantly.

Tap out. Done studying? Tap the tag again and everything unlocks. The lock only lives while you’re in the space.

A student-led venture
Typalock is a student-led venture, based right here in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Piloting in the SUB is deliberate: thousands of students pass through the building every day to study between classes, meet project groups, or hunt for a quiet seat during exams. It puts Typalock in front of exactly the people it was designed for: students trying to get real work done in a world engineered to interrupt them. We study here too. We built the thing we needed.
Focus is also easier when the people around you are focused. Tag by tag, the goal is simple: make the SUB a place where your phone works for you, not against you.
